This week the fashion industry lost an iconic figure. One of the last modern day couturiers, Oscar de la Renta was trained by Cristobal Balenciaga and Antonio del Castillo; and rose to fame independently as a household name in the 1960’s for dressing Jacqueline Kennedy.

Hailing from a ‘well to do’ Dominican family, he studied painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. While in school, he sketched designs for newspapers and fashion houses to earn extra money. His designs caught the eye of the wife of the U.S Ambassador to Spain, and she commissioned him to design a piece for their daughter. The dress he designed for the girl, appeared on the cover of Life magazine that fall, and piqued Oscar de la Renta’s interest in the fashion industry. He soon began sketching designs for famed couturier Balenciaga, and later considered him his mentor. By 1965 he launched his own label, and served as creative director for esteemed fashion houses Lanvin and Balmain over his career.

Defining the uptown woman decade after decade, here’s a look at some of the incredible designers most memorable pieces!
