How can you take care of your shirts so that they last as long as possible? Delicate cleaning as well as a few tips can help your shirts last up to 50% longer.

Starching your shirts will cause them to wear out prematurely as starch is an abrasive and actually cuts the fibers of your clothes a little bit every time. Here at Jeeves we have seen shirts wear out in 6 months from being starched. So, we recommend to our clients that starch not be used. Note that this is a recommendation that falls in line with the care instructions of many fine quality shirt makers.

How your shirts are washed and ironed will also effect the longevity. Incorrect settings on irons,  excessive hot water temperature, and the use of chlorine bleach when washing; will cause the fibers of cotton shirts to break down sooner.  As a general rule of thumb it is better to use non-chlorine bleach, but make sure to pay attention to directions.

Most local dry cleaners that offer a laundered shirt service, offer a machine pressed shirt. This service is generally pretty inexpensive as 70 to 100 shirts can be washed and pressed per hour using automatic pressing equipment. This type of pressing can be very aggressive and shorten the life of your shirt.

When the fibers of your shirt do start to wear out, the first places that you will notice it will be across the fold of the collar, the fold of french cuffs and along the edges of the cuffs. When fabric is folded, it adds stress to the fibers and these stress points are the first areas to fail.

To put off this wear and tear, wash a small batch in warm water, followed by a hand press, to allow fine quality shirts to last as long as possible. Jeeves follows these methods along with careful stain removal, to provide a luxurious, gentle, shirt laundry service.
