Garments which are micro-pleated, favored by the designer Issey Miyake, by their design, will begin to loosen or soften during normal wear. The care instructions for these garments must be strictly followed, otherwise the pleats will soften at an accelerated rate. The care label for the garments illustrated indicate to hand wash and air dry. Steam, high moisture environments, perspiration and heat are other factors which will effect micro-pleats.

What does this mean to the wearing of these beautiful garments? If it is hot summer day, try to stay in air conditioning and do not sit down! Really.

Once micro-pleats loosen, there isn’t a way to fix the problem. This is something you should know before you invest in this type of garment.

Larger pleats, such as box pleats and inverted pleats can ironed by hand to make them sharp again. Micro-pleats are created at the garment factory using metal rollers that “stamp” the pleats into the fabric. This is something that cannot be done with a hand iron.
