This month our “Beautiful by Difficult” is a wonderful white wool coat with stone trim. The garment care label indicates that the coat can be machine dry cleaned, and suggests that the trim be wrapped for protection during cleaning.
While this may be a good idea in theory, it cannot be done.
The stones are glued to the black trim and cannot be wrapped for cleaning. The stones do not appear to be stones at all, but plastic.
Jeeves has major concerns about cleaning this coat; we will need to test each stone individually to see if the dry cleaning solution will effect the clarity of the stone, the black trim will be tested for bleeding and the glue tested to see if the stones will loosen when exposed to dry cleaning.
The only wrapping that can be done would be to baste fabric over the trim for protection from tumbling.
When we clean this coat at Jeeves, we will have our tailoring department document the placement of the trim, and then remove all of the trim prior to cleaning.
This white coat will, of course, get soiled once the client wears it and a thorough cleaning will be needed. The way this coat was made, makes the coat very difficult and expensive to clean.
If a dry cleaner followed the garment care instructions, we feel that the stones will be damaged in the dry cleaning process. Making for an unhappy client and unhappy dry cleaner.
The maker of this coat should not label it as cleanable when they clearly know that the stones will have sharp edges after wear or cleaning. We at Jeeves are scratching our heads over this coat and label instructions.
