How to Properly Care for Your Cashmere Scarf

January 12, 2021

Nothing keeps you as warm and feels as nice as a cashmere scarf. But how do you properly care for your cashmere scarf?

After wearing it, either neatly fold your scarf and place in a drawer or store folded over a padded hanger, like a pair of pants. This will prevent wrinkles.

If you get a pull or hole from wear, have it repaired right away before the issue becomes worse. A small hole can become a large hole if not cared for.

If you get a stain or your scarf becomes soiled, dry cleaning is the best option for cleaning. Some cashmere can be hand-washed, but I would advise against washing a cashmere scarf due to the size and fineness of the fabric.

At the end of the cold weather months, always clean your cashmere scarves before folding them carefully and putting them away. Moths have expensive taste and love cashmere. As scarves are in contact with our skin, oil and fragrance can transfer onto the cashmere which besides stains will attract moths. Moths will create moth holes, which will equal an expensive repair or a scarf that looks like “Swiss cheese”.

The take aways for properly caring for your cashmere scarf are:

  • Clean your scarf if it gets stained or soiled.
  • Neatly fold your scarf when you are not wearing it.
  • Repair holes or pulls sooner rather than later.
  • To prevent moth holes, have your scarf cleaned before putting it away for the season, even if it looks clean.
