Every year, the Metropolitan Museum of Arts hosts the Met Gala fundraiser to launch a fashion exhibit that highlights achievements within the world of Fashion. Arguably the biggest event in fashion, other than New York Fashion Week; all eyes are on the red carpet to see how attending guests will interpret the nights theme.
How did this year’s attendees fare, as the Met looked to honor Rei Kawakubo’s ‘cool kid’ Japanese street style brand Comme des Garçons?
We can’t help but admit that we were a little less than impressed with this year’s red carpet fashions…
The Gala’s second time honoring a living designer (the first being Yves Saint Laurent), Comme des Garçons is known for its unconventional and deconstructed designs. Kawakubo’s designs aren’t about being pretty or on trend, but about creating art through the utilization of space.
Unfortunately, many of Hollywood’s elite did not do their homework on the designer, as most of the looks that appeared on the red carpet were off theme. But for those few celebrities that hit the mark, we’d like to commend and them here!

There’s no better way to pay homage to a designer than by wearing a look that they’re famous for, and actress Tracee Ellis Ross did just that! Allowing her ensemble to speak for itself, she paired the iconic dress with elegant accessories from Farfetch. The dark blue macro floral motif perfectly complemented the ensemble, never overpowering or distracting it from the dress’ deconstructed shape.

Singer Cassie cut through the Met Gala red carpet in this sharp (quite literally!) gown by On Aura Tout Vu, making a lasting impression. Although the bodice may have been typical, the skirt was anything but. The many layers of spikes paid tribute to the theme in a fun and unexpected way.

We saved the best for last. Singer and fashion aficionado Rihanna stole the show with this flower inspired Commes des Garçons ensemble! Never afraid to take a fashion risk, Rihanna paired the dress with some seriously scrappy heels from Dsquared2. Now, this is how you adhere to a theme. Brava Rihanna!
We at Jeeves of New York are proud to say that the Met trusts us to care for their garments. If you have Commes des Garçons treasures you’d like to keep pristine, let us take care of them! (https://jeevesny NULL.com/locations/new-york-/)
