Broken Buttons, Oh My!

In Jeeves’ opinion having a beautiful garment with chipped or mismatched buttons takes away from the elegance of the look.

High-end designers use buttons that are made from shell, bone or horn and many are embossed with the designer’s logo. While beautiful, these types of buttons are prone to chipping and  breaking during the dry cleaning process.

Buttons, if loose prior to cleaning, may fall off during cleaning and become lost. Finding an exact match is usually impossible and either you would have to settle for non-matching button or replace the entire set.

Chanel specifically puts a label in each garment that tells you to remove the buttons prior to cleaning. If you ever need to replace a missing or damaged Chanel button, be prepared to wait, sometimes longer than six months to have a replacement sent from Paris. Chanel buttons can be upwards of $10 each.

This is preventable by having your dry cleaner remove your buttons prior to cleaning and then sew them on after. Most dry cleaners may provide this service if you ask, but at Jeeves this is a standard procedure. Jeeves evaluates every button on every garment and determines if they need to be removed for cleaning.

Jeeves has a staff of three who’s only job is to remove and replace buttons at our workroom. We do charge $1 per button on fabric garments and $3 per button on leather items, but this service is worth every penny.

Another option is to wrap fragile buttons with foil or velcro. While this will somewhat protect buttons from chipping in cleaning, it does not prevent a loose button from getting lost.

Our advice, if you have a garment with irreplaceable buttons, ask your dry cleaner to remove them for cleaning. It is worth the extra effort.
