The Jeeves team was called upon again to clean the “Fabric Wall of Felted Wool and Silk” (2009), installation by Dutch artist Claudy Jongstra (https://www NULL.claudyjongstra NULL.com/), at the David Rubenstein Atrium in Lincoln Center. Jeeves last cleaned the installation in 2014.
Jeeves entirely hand-cleaned the installation, which spans over 97 feet long and 16 feet tall. Specialized lift equipment needed to be employed as the top of the installation is over 30 feet from the floor.
As the David Rubenstein Atrium is a public space, the Jeeves team had to work overnight to clean each square inch of the delicate installation. Areas of the fabric were soiled with oil from cooking from the cafe below. This presented a challenge to the Jeeves team: to safely remove the cooking grease without damaging the delicate wool and silk fibers of the installation.
Supervised by fiber and textile cleaning expert and Managing Director of Jeeves New York, Jerry Pozniak, the Jeeves team was successful with the cleaning.
Observing the installation after cleaning, one would notice how much brighter the colors of the fibers became. Besides Mr. Pozniak, the Jeeves team included Alix Pozniak, fiber cleaning expert, and Max Laquaderia, fabric cleaner and lift operator.
Claudy Jongstra has works in the permanent collections of Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Stedilijk Museum, Amsterdam; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York; Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design.
