Vincua, The Most Expensive Fiber in the World

January 10, 2019

Imagine a fiber that is more expensive by weight than gold. This same fiber was once forbidden for commoners only to be worn by Inca royalty and kings.

Vicuna are cousins of the llama and roam the high mountains of the Andes. Once three million vincua populated the region; they were hunted rather than sheared for a fiber that is finer than the finest cashmere.

Now the Italian brand known for cashmere, Loro Piana, has introduced this fiber to the luxury market after an absence of many years.

Loro Piana has invested in nature reserves and preservation initiatives to increase the vicuna population from a low of 5000. Vicuna has been reintroduced to a younger luxury consumer as it was unknown and not relevant.

What is relevant to the luxury market is the high cost of garments made from 100% vicuna. At the raw material stage, vicuna is ten times of the cost of the finest cashmere and one hundred times the cost of wool.

Jeeves had the opportunity to hand-clean a Lora Piana vicuna outer jacket for a client recently. Beautifully constructed with thoughtful suede details, there was only one way to care for the cloth of kings; by hand.

Using techniques and procedures developed for hand-cleaning fine wool and cashmere, the craftsmen at Jeeves painstakingly cleaned every square inch of this beautiful garment, that according to Loro Piana came with a $25,000 price tag. The results? Amazing.

Vicuna is a very, very special fabric that should never be subject to standard dry cleaning methods, there are only a few dry cleaning firms in the world who understand this; Jeeves is at your service. (https://www NULL.jeevesny NULL.com/contact/)
